Priniatikos Pyrgos
Priniatikos Pyrgos is a small peninsula at Kalo Chorio, between Karavostasi beach and Agios Panteleimonas beach. It is one of the most important archaeological sites of Kato (lower) Mirabello. It was continuously inhabited in Minoan and Roman times. The earliest occupation of the area dates back to the Final Neolithic and Early Minoan I and II periods. From then onwards until the Late Minoan I period, human presence was constant. The Middle Minoan III period was an important period for the site. The Minoan settlement was most probably destroyed in Late Minoan IA period.
The second most important period for the site was the Roman period (1st-7th centuries). Excavations by the Irish Archaeological School have revealed structures of that particular era. Findings indicate that the next phase of inhabitation began in the 13th century and spanned through the Venetian and Ottoman periods.
Access to the archaeological site is very easy (through Agios Panteleimonas beach).
